Guiding Principles

My practice draws from a number of theoretical orientations. My approach is holistic and integrated based on a strong belief that we are social beings that strive for connection and purpose; that with encouragement and support we can improve our mental health, relationships, and quality of life. My process and purpose is to establish a safe non-judgmental relationship and environment that can support and facilitate positive changes. I assume your current difficulties are linked to an internal and contextual meaning and that each of us have the skills and strengths to move the obstacles in our path. Within our relationship we will reflect, assess and develop a clearer self understanding of your individual current or past difficulties and patterns, so that you can make conscious choices to bridge to attaining increased satisfaction and stability.

Some important approaches I use in my practice to facilitate change are:

  • Existential and Humanistic approaches value our innate potential for health and the importance of finding a sense of meaning in life.
  • Cognitive and Behavioral approaches challenge us to actively explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviors; test our automatic thoughts and assumptions, and experiment with new methods of self talk.
  • Interpersonal and Relational approaches help us to understand people in terms of their relationships with others, and recognize the importance of early childhood experiences in creating the mental roadmaps that guide us.
  • Developmental approaches recognize how our abilities evolve over time, as well and the tasks our culture expects.
  • Mind-body approaches, such as physical activity, progressive relaxation and mindfulness meditation help to reduce stress, to make us aware in the present moment, and to improve our performance in emotional, intellectual and goal-oriented pursuits.

My philosophy is that there are many pathways to health.

  • Counseling is self-directed, strength based and empowering - it involves a personal recognition of the need for change & transformation - healing and self redefinition through identifying resources and resiliencies.
  • It is the acceptance that a problem exists, the ability to make a conscious choice, and a willingness to collaborate strategies to change and find a unique solution
  • It is a motivational process that leads a person to make healthier choices to improve the functioning & quality of their lives.
